Basic Recipe For The Best Dutch Pancake


When I was a little girl, it was pancake day every saturday. Nowadays people often make pancakes with a mixture they buy in the supermarket, which I really don’t understand. I mean how hard can it be to mix, eggs, milk, salt and flour together. Yes folks, that is all you need! Today I will share the recipe I have learnt from my dad and he learnt it from my grandma, so I scale this one under the heading ‘family recipes’! Sorry that I give the secret recipe price, dad, but I need to help people out there that don’t know how to make pancakes from scratch.

So like I said, this is a very simple 4 ingredient recipe, probably all ingredients you have in your home anyways. So, perfect diner food if yo don’t want to go to the supermarket, but don’t have a lot to eat. The recipe is all about the ratios.

Ingredients (enough to feed 4 people):

  • 800 ml milk
  • 400 gram flour
  • 2 eggs
  • pinche of salt

Mix all ingredients together. First the milk and eggs and then mix in the flour bit by bit to avoid lumps in the batter. Don’t be too frugal on the salt, you really need it to make them taste better!

Now heat up your pan with butter and scoop in some of the batter. Swirl around the pan to make your pancake. As soon as you see that the batter starts to dry you can flip it. Use your throw-the-pancake-in-the-air-skills or use a spatula. But I must say, it is a real advantage to able to flip it by throwing it up and catch it, because the chance that you destroy the pancake is less. Especially when you start to add bacon or apple for example, the pancakes can be a bit fragile.

Bake the pancake for a minute or 3 or just check the color every now and then. And poef! Faster than you could nuy your mix in the store, you have your home made pancake ready to eat!
